About Kitchen Feminism

Project Background

Kitchen Feminism was a short-term small-scale social practice art project funded through the City of Calgary’s Public Art Program Community Initiated microgrant program.  The goal of the project was to work with a group of womxn who had been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and to use theatre techniques to explore the ways in which their societal roles had “rolled back in time” to roles from the past.  Meeting on zoom, the participants explored juxtaposition of objects and costume against the settings of the present and design a series of “tableaux” or images based on their own prevailing experiences.  The participants were then brought to a by-appointment photo session with the lead artist, Dawn van de Schoot, who coached the womxn into the emotional tableaux which were then photographed by Shannon Smith.  The final photos for the project were displayed in an online gallery at www.kitchenfeminism.com accompanied by a short written piece developed by the participants with the support of the lead artist.
